This iris first bloomed for me in 2017.

My reasons for purchasing it had more to do with the hybridizer and respect for award winners than anything else. (While I first met Bill Maryott back when he was still selling irises from his home in San Jose, I mostly know him from the daylily world. I was so happy for Bill when this iris, his last introduction, won the Dykes Medal in 2013.)

Before this bloomed for me, I was slowly coming to realize that I really don't care much for strong yellow or gold bearded irises. I am not sure why. Perhaps it is because strong, saturated yellow and gold bearded irises somehow seem unnatural to me; perhaps it is also because I can get all of the yellow and gold colored flowers I want from the daylilies (where those seem to me to be more natural colors).

All of that said, when this iris bloomed for me for the first time, I could see how it won the Dykes Medal. It is an arresting and commanding iris, a Diva, which demands your attention. Literally the only other iris near it (it was on the pool steps, in a pot) that could begin to compete with it for attention was 'Mesmerizer' (also a Dykes Medal winner).

If you like this color combination in bearded irises, then by all means get this iris.

(Location: Currently in two pots; these should go into the garden somewhere, but it is not clear where this iris can go without dominating everything else around it.)
